In-Person vs. Telehealth Therapy for New Mothers

In-person therapy offers a dedicated space away from home and the physical presence of a therapist. Telehealth offers flexibility and no commute with a newborn. For new mothers — especially in the fourth trimester — telehealth removes significant barriers to starting care. Both formats are clinically effective for postpartum mood disorders.

Both Work — The Question Is Access

The research on telehealth therapy for perinatal mood disorders is clear: it is clinically equivalent to in-person therapy for the vast majority of presentations. The decision between the two formats is therefore less about which is more effective and more about which removes the fewest barriers to actually starting and maintaining care.

The Case for In-Person

In-person therapy offers a dedicated physical space that is separate from home — which matters for mothers who find it difficult to be fully present when surrounded by the demands of domestic life. The physical presence of a therapist also carries its own relational quality that some people find more grounding. For mothers who process trauma somatically — through the body — in-person work can be particularly valuable.

The Case for Telehealth

For new mothers, especially in the fourth trimester, telehealth removes the most common barriers to care: no commute with a newborn, no arranging childcare for a session, no navigating parking in Brentwood. Sessions can happen during a nap window, in a quiet corner of the house, or even in a parked car. Many mothers who might not have started therapy at all find telehealth to be the format that actually gets them in the door.

The Mother Hood offers telehealth to mothers across California, which means access to a PMH-C specialist is not limited by geography. A mother in Pasadena, San Diego, or Sacramento can work with a therapist who has specific perinatal training rather than settling for the nearest in-network provider.

The Bottom Line

Choose the format that makes it most likely you will actually show up consistently. For most new mothers, that is telehealth. If you have a strong preference for in-person and are in the Los Angeles area, that option is available too.

At The Mother Hood, we offer specialized in-person and telehealth perinatal therapy in Los Angeles and across California via telehealth. If you're ready to talk, reach out to schedule a consultation.
