Evidence-Based Therapy for Moms

We use proven therapeutic methods adapted explicitly for mothers, including EMDR for birth trauma, CBT for postpartum anxiety, and specialized OCD treatment for intrusive thoughts.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reintegration

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (usually eye movements or tapping) to help the brain reprocess distressing memories. It’s grounded in the idea that trauma “gets stuck” in the nervous system and continues to trigger emotional and physical responses, even long after the event. Our EMDR therapists are trained in both perinatal mental health and trauma-focused care, so your sessions are paced with safety, consent, and emotional attunement.

Interpersonal Therapy

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is a short-term, structured therapy that focuses on how your relationships, both past and present, affect your emotional well-being. We tailor IPT to your lived experience as a new or expecting parent. Our perinatal therapists are trained to help you explore how shifts in your relationships are impacting your mental health and how you can restore connection, clarity, and confidence.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely studied and effective treatments for anxiety, depression, and intrusive thoughts, especially during the perinatal period. At The Mother Hood, we offer trauma-informed CBT tailored to the unique emotional landscape of new and expecting parents in Los Angeles and virtually across California.

Cognitive Processing Therapy

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an evidence-based, structured form of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. It helps individuals process painful events and shift the beliefs that keep them stuck in shame, fear, or emotional numbness. Our perinatal therapists are trained in trauma-informed care and understand how trauma in the reproductive journey uniquely affects mothers and birthing parents.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a modern, mindfulness-based form of behavioral therapy that helps individuals move through difficult emotions without getting stuck in them. At The Mother Hood, we use ACT to support new and expecting parents in Los Angeles who are navigating postpartum anxiety therapy, emotional overwhelm, grief, and identity shifts during matrescence.

Inference-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) is a modern, effective approach for treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), especially when intrusive thoughts are tied to self-doubt, imagined scenarios, or moral fears. At The Mother Hood, we use I-CBT to help new and expecting parents in Los Angeles work through postpartum OCD therapy, pregnancy-related anxiety, and disturbing intrusive thoughts that impact daily life and self-trust.

Clinical Hypnosis

Clinical hypnosis is a gentle, evidence-based therapy that uses focused attention and guided imagery to help you access your subconscious mind for healing, insight, and relief. At The Mother Hood, we offer clinical hypnosis for birth trauma, pregnancy-related anxiety, perinatal loss, and postpartum stress, serving clients in Los Angeles and virtually across California.

Exposure and Prevention Therapy

Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP) is the gold-standard treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related anxiety conditions. At The Mother Hood, our therapists are trained in both perinatal mental health and exposure-based therapy for moms. Whether you’re pregnant, newly postpartum, or months into parenting, we meet you where you are—with compassion, clinical expertise, and a plan.

Maternal Mental Health Therapists: The Mother Hood Difference

The Mother Hood is a judgment-free and shame-free space where no mom ever feels like she’s too much, too broken, or too alone. We envision a space where every mother feels seen and cared for on their hardest and best days. Our clinicians are specially trained and up-to-date on the top research and best practices for evidence-based perinatal and postnatal mental health care. Whether you want to regulate your own emotions, manage anxiety or depression, or are feeling overwhelmed by the demands, we’re here to support you.

Individual Therapy FAQs

How long are sessions, and how often do we meet?

Individual sessions run 50 minutes—just enough time to dive deep while respecting your packed schedule. Most clients start with weekly sessions to build momentum, then adjust as needed. Because let's be real: sometimes you need more support during sleep regressions or major transitions.

Do you offer therapy for new moms? What about moms of older children?

Our Los Angeles therapy services are designed for all stages of motherhood, from navigating pregnancy and post-partum to managing school-age children and beyond.

Do you offer online therapy for postpartum depression?

Our postpartum depression therapy services are available online and in person. We’re here to connect whenever and wherever you need us.

Do you take insurance?

We're out-of-network providers, but we'll give you a superbill to submit to your insurance and help you navigate that process. We also offer sliding scale spots because maternal mental health support should be accessible.

What’s the difference between virtual and in-person therapy?

Both options offer the same high-quality care. In-person sessions happen in our cozy LA office. Virtual sessions let you skip traffic and do therapy from your car during nap time or after bedtime. The best choice? The one that actually works for your life right now.

Can you accommodate my schedule? What about nights and weekends?

We offer early morning, evening, and weekend slots because we know that "typical" office hours don't always work for mom life. Need to reschedule because your kid woke up with a fever? We get it. Just give us 24 hours' notice when possible.

What if I’m not in Los Angeles?

We're licensed to serve clients anywhere in California. Whether you're in LA for in-person sessions or joining virtually from San Diego to Sacramento, we've got you covered.

Is therapy confidential?

Everything shared in session stays in session—it's like Vegas, but for your mental health. We use secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms for virtual sessions and messaging. And yes, you can absolutely tell us about your mother-in-law without it getting back to her.

What about emergencies or crisis support?

While we're not a crisis service, we provide all clients with an emergency resource guide and contact protocol. If you're having thoughts of harming yourself or others, call 988/911 or head to your nearest emergency room.
